Mayor’s Message for Friday, April 5, 2024

Dear Residents,
I want to take this opportunity to clarify some misinformation that is currently circulating regarding Area N. The Village has not been made aware of any intention to disconnect, or “de-annex,” Area N from the Village’s corporate limits. Unless there is an actual petition filed, the prospect of a de-annexation is mere rumor and speculation that has no basis.
Unequivocally, de-annexing Area N from the rest of the Village would isolate portions of the Village and substantially disrupt the Village’s utility plan. As of today, April 5, the Village has not received any application, petition, or other request from the purchaser of Area N.
The conversation about Area N is ongoing. It is encouraging to see so many residents voicing their concerns about community issues that matter to them. However, it is disappointing to see so much of the dialogue is lacking factual information. I hope that going forward, we can conduct this conversation in a manner where everyone’s perspective becomes productive and is based on accurate information rather than rumors.
At the last Plan Commission meeting AC Power, a solar development company based in New York City, introduced a concept to develop a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) on the decommissioned landfill located on Mundhank Road. The landfill is owned by BFI Waste Systems of North America, which is an affiliate of Republic Services. AC Power intends to submit a formal application to the Village for an amendment to the Special Use Permit that the landfill currently holds. AC Power would be seeking to install solar panels on the landfill site, creating community solar that will connect back to the electric grid. AC Power was established in 2016 and its portfolio includes fully operational projects in New Jersey and New York plus an additional 13 projects under development in Illinois. For more information about AC Power, visit their website at https://www.acpowerllc.com/.
The Village again received recognition as a “Tree City USA” in addition to the “Growth Award” for dedication to caring for and investing in village trees. The Tree City USA Growth Award is presented by the Arbor Day Foundation to participating Tree City USA communities that demonstrate higher levels of tree care and community engagement during the calendar year. We are honored to be recognized as a Tree City for five years (2019-2024) in a row.
As a reminder, a special spring village-wide brush and branch pickup will start this Monday, April 8. Residential brush and branches must be at the curb by 6:00 a.m. in order not to miss the collection. Although it may take several days to complete this project, Cuba Township will make only ONE sweep per street through the Village. This collection does not include all yard waste, such as leaves, please read and follow the additional Brush Pick-up Guidelines below to ensure your pickup. Each property is limited to ONE brush pile (maximum of 4 ft. high by four ft. wide, no longer than 10 ft.). Yard waste stickers are not needed for this special pickup.
April is Illinois Safe Digging Month. If you have a landscaping or planting project that requires any kind of digging, be sure to contact JULIE first. JULIE provides free utility locating services for your property and could save you from costly utility repairs, serious injury, or even fines. JULIE’s request system is available all day, every day by phone at 811 or 800-892-0123, and online at www.illinois1call.com.
This morning, a chicken was spotted wandering the shoulder of West Mundhank Road, bringing to mind the question “Why did the chicken cross the road?” or “Why is it in the Village?”. As a reminder, having chickens is prohibited by Village ordinance. If you have questions please reach out to Code Enforcement Officer Ryan Murphy at the Village 847-381-7510.
