Groot
The Village of South Barrington and Groot Industries* offers an enhanced waste and recycling collection program to South Barrington Residents. Residents are instructed to call Groot directly for all service and pickup related questions and concerns at 800-244-1977.

*Groot is the Village’s designated municipal waste service contractor by agreement with the Village of South Barrington, according to the Village Code.

Garbage Collection

Collection Day & Times

South Barrington residents refuse and recycling collection will be held on Monday of each week. All materials will need to be out by 6:00 a.m. to be assured pick up.

Unlimited Refuse Collection

Each household is permitted to set out unlimited household waste for collection. Refuse must be placed in bags or personal containers not exceeding 35 gallons in capacity or 45 pounds in weight. Optional 95 gallon Groot refuse carts are available for rent for $1.75 per month. Residents will be allowed up to one bulk item per week at no additional cost.

Unlimited recycling services are provided. Each household is supplied with a 65 or 35-gallon recycling cart for their use. This was paid for as part of a Village procured DCEO grant. Extra recycling items may be placed in an 18-gallon bin, a cardboard box or a clearly marked container which is labeled “Recycling Only”.

Acceptable Items:

Paper: Newspaper with inserts, magazines, catalogs (glossy & non-glossy), telephone directories, office/school paper, advertising and junk mail, Kraft brown paper bags, corrugated cardboard, paperboard and chipboard such as cereal, pasta, clothing, and tissue boxes.

Metal: Aluminum cans, steel, tin and bi-metal cans.

Glass: Brown, green and clear glass, bottle and jars, cleaned.

Aseptic Packaging: Juice boxes and milk cartons.

Plastic: Beverage and food containers, milk, water, juice bottle, liquid detergent, fabric softener, bleach, shampoo bottles, yogurt cups, vegetable oil bottles, etc. Recyclable plastic will contain the following symbols:

Unacceptable Items:

Do not put the following items in the recycle bins for recycling: wire hangers, mirrors, lightbulbs, window glass, ceramics, soiled fibers (e.g. oily pizza boxes, paper napkins, etc.), batteries, plastic bags, Styrofoam, wood, plastic film, plastic toys, diapers, or elections.

Recycling Preparation:

  • Rinse all recyclables free of food residue.
  • Leave caps on plastic containers.
  • Materials may be mixed together.
  • Paper may be placed in paper bags.
  • Flatten all corrugated cardboard and paperboard boxes.
  • Remove any non-paper packing material.
  • Do not put recyclables in plastic bags such as kitchen or grocery bags.Plastic bags are not recyclable or accepted. Return plastic bags to your local grocery store for recycling.

Curbside Electronic & White Goods Waste Program

Electronic waste items are collected at the curb at no additional cost to the residents. Residents are required to call Groot at 800-244-1977 by the Friday before the next scheduled collection day to schedule a pickup.

Electronic Waste Items Accepted Include: Cable receivers, cell phones, computer cables, monitors, desktops, laptops, notebooks, tablets, and converter boxes. Fax machines, keyboards, mice, MP3 Players, Portable Digital Assistants (PDAs), printers and multi-functional printers, satellite receivers, scanners, televisions (all types), video game consoles, video recorders and players, and zip drives.White Goods (Appliances) Collection.

White Goods (Appliances) Waste Collection

White Goods are collected at the curb at no additional cost to the residents. Residents are required to call Groot at 800-244-1977 to schedule a pickup.

White Goods (Appliance) Items Accepted Include: Refrigerators, freezers, ovens, washers, air conditioners, humidifiers, de-humidifiers, dryers, water heaters, water softeners, dishwashers, stoves, ranges, furnaces.

Unacceptable Collection Items:

Illinois law prohibits the disposal of certain waste in landfills.

Unacceptable Items List: Automobile tires and automobile batteries; explosive, toxic, hazardous and chemical waste; flammable waste, gasoline, motor oil, anti-freeze; large automobile parts; acids and poisons, CFL and fluorescent bulbs.

These items should be disposed of by other means and residents should visit www.swancc.org for more information on how to dispose of these items.

Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC)

South Barrington is a member of the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC). As a SWANCC member, a number of programs are available to our residents.

The Village of South Barrington holds an annual Community Shred Event in September every year. In the meantime, you can visit SWANCC’s website for upcoming document destruction, electronic recycling, holiday light recycling, mercury thermometer recycling, and pharmaceutical/sharps disposal events.

The following items will be accepted at SWANCC events or at permanent drop off locations for recycling. Please remove electronics from plastic packaging and boxes before bringing to a SWANCC dropp-off location.

Yard Waste Program

Pickup up your yard waste stickers at Village Hall during regular business hours. Stickers are $3.25 each and must be affixed to each 30-gallon biodegradable landscape bag.

  • Landscape materials are collected on your regular collection day beginning April 1, 2024 through November 25, 2024
  • Landscape which is too bulky to be placed in a bag, such as branches or brush must be securely tied (with biodegradable twine), bundled not to exceed 4 feet in length, no larger than 2 feet in diameter, and must not weigh more than 45 lbs.
  • Acceptable landscape includes: grass clippings, leaves, branches, brush, garden plants, flowers, weeds, vines, bark pieces, garden vegetables and garden fruit.
  • Unacceptable landscape includes: fence posts, railroad ties, firewood, sod, earth and rocks.
  • No plastic bags may be used for landscape waste.

Construction/Demolition Debris

All material must be cut to no more than 4 feet in length and no larger than 2 feet in diameter, bagged or bundled, and free of nails and sharp objects not exceeding 45 pounds. Carpet must be cut up in four foot lengths not exceeding 45 pounds per roll. One cubic yard will be taken at no charge per collection day, each additional cubic yard will be a cost of $13.00.

Bulk Item Disposal

Service includes curbside collection of one bulk item per week at no additional cost. For additional bulk items, residents should call Groot to schedule a pick-up in advance.

Bulk Items Include:

Boxes, barrels, crates, furniture, and similar items that do not fit into a proper container and can be safely collected/lifted by one driver without assistance.

Oversized/Overweight Item Disposal

Oversized and overweight items are any single large or extra heavy item that requires Groot to schedule a special pick-up. An example of an oversized item is any item that requires two or more people to safely lift. There will be an additional cost for over-sized items. Please call Groot to schedule a pickup.

Carts and Dumpster Services

Groot offers an optional 95-gallon refuse cart for $1.75 rental fee per month. Dumpster service is available but may require a Village permit for use.  Call the Village at 847-381-7510 to inquire. To order a dumpster, call Groot at 800-244-1977 or order online at www.groot.com.

Holiday Schedule

Collections will be delayed one day after a holiday. If the holiday falls on a Sunday or Monday, service will be delayed by one day that holiday week. If the holiday falls on a Friday or Saturday, there will be no change to your regular pick up day.

Christmas Tree Pickup

Christmas trees may be placed out at the curb for collection during regular pickup. Christmas trees will be collected through the month of January and do not require a sticker.

Vacation Service Turn-Off Program

Households vacated for 4 weeks or more may suspend collection and disposal service by written or verbal notification to Groot. Residents will not be billed for households vacant for 4 weeks or more, with the maximum suspension being no more than 18 weeks, once in a contract year (May 1 – April 30). A date for reinstatement must be given to Groot upon notification of suspension. Groot must be notified in advance and no credit will be given for any notification after a resident returns from vacation if not notified previously.
