Patriot Day is September 11th
Patriot Day, observed annually on September 11, is a solemn day of remembrance in the United States. It honors the nearly 3,000 lives lost during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
This day also serves as a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the first responders — firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and countless citizens — who risked or gave their lives in service to others.
Here are some ways to recognize September 11th:
- Moment of Silence: At 8:46 a.m. (Eastern Time), the time when the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, Americans often observe a moment of silence.
- Flags at Half-Staff: U.S. flags are flown at half-staff at government buildings and many homes across the country.
- Memorial Services and Ceremonies: Events are held at the World Trade Center Memorial in New York, the Pentagon, and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania.
- Service and Unity: Many Americans participate in acts of service to honor the spirit of unity and resilience that emerged in the aftermath of the attacks.
Finally, during the recent Labor Day holiday, our officers conducted a focused safety campaign targeting impaired driving. Their efforts contributed to safer roadways and helped raise public awareness about the risks associated with driving under the influence. We thank our officers for their dedication to community safety and encourage all residents to continue practicing safe driving habits year-round.
As always, I am here to listen to your thoughts and concerns. Feel free to email me at pmccombie@southbarrington.org, or use the anonymous comment boxes located in the lobbies of Village Hall and the Police Department. I review these messages privately and value your input.
Have an enjoyable weekend!

Paula McCombie
Mayor
