Dear Residents,
Today marks National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, and I would like to take a moment to acknowledge and recognize the dedicated men and women of the South Barrington Police Department for their unwavering commitment to the residents and community. We are fortunate to have outstanding individuals who exemplify honor, respect, and integrity at every level, and we are truly grateful for all they do to keep our community safe.
A sincere thank you as well to Barbara B. Rose Elementary School, South Barrington Park District, the Arboretum and Calibre Coffee who also had a hand in helping us recognize our officers. No matter how big or small the gesture, every show of appreciation is meaningful and does not go unnoticed.
THANK YOU TO ALL OUR OFFICERS AND SUPPORT STAFF!

UNSUNG HEROINES- WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
In celebration of Women’s History Month, Cook County annually honors the Unsung Heroine Award, recognizing 18 exceptional women whose invaluable contributions to their communities, families, and professions often go unacknowledged. This award aligns with the mission of Women’s History Month to highlight and share the significant roles women have played throughout history in shaping our social, cultural, economic, and political institutions.
By honoring these remarkable women, the County aims to illuminate their stories, express gratitude for their efforts, and celebrate the achievements of the countless women they represent in Cook County’s rich history.
The Cook County Commission on Women’s Issues is now accepting nominations for the 2026 Peggy Montes Unsung Heroine Awards (UHAB) through January 15th where the women selected will be honored on March 4th at the annual Unsung Heroine Awards Breakfast.
Nominations are open to the public and recognize women who, in a professional or volunteer capacity, have made significant contributions to the well-being of their community but have not received widespread recognition.
Eligibility requirements:
- Nominee must reside in Cook County
- Elected officials are not eligible
If you know a deserving woman, help us celebrate the women who make a lasting impact.

AMERICA250 CELEBRATION COMING TO SOUTH BARRINGTON
In 2026, the United States will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a historic milestone known as America250. This nationwide celebration will honor our nation’s history, reflect on the ideals that shaped our democracy, and inspire future generations.
In September, the Village of South Barrington proudly passed a resolution to become a participating community in Illinois’ America250 initiative (IL250). By joining IL250, the Village is committed to recognizing this important anniversary through educational opportunities, community engagement, and local events that highlight our shared history and civic pride.
As we begin planning, we are looking for ideas from our community on how South Barrington can recognize and celebrate America250. We would love to see all generations get involved, whether through event ideas, educational programs, creative projects, or volunteer opportunities.
More details will be shared as plans develop, and we look forward to celebrating this historic milestone together as a community!
For questions or interest in being involved in planning, please reach out to Makayla at mterfehn@southbarrington.org

REPORTING POTHOLES & DAMAGED MAILBOXES
Winter weather can be tough on our roads, and increased plowing during these months may occasionally result in damage to resident mailboxes. While the crews take every precaution to avoid incidents, we understand that damage can occur. The Village is prepared to assist with repairs when damage is caused by plowing on community streets.
- To report a damaged mailbox, please complete the form HERE
- To report a pothole, please complete the form HERE
Once your request is submitted, a member of the Village team will contact you regarding next steps.
Thank you for your cooperation.
RECYCLING BATTERIES
Beginning January 1, 2026, Illinois law requires battery manufacturers to fund battery collection, meaning there is no cost to consumers to recycle batteries. The Village is often asked if we serve as a battery recycling drop-off location and while we are not, there are many nearby businesses and retailers that do.
To find a convenient drop-off location for both rechargeable and single-use batteries, visit the link below. This tool allows you to search by location and battery type:
Drop-Off Locator: https://www.call2recycle.org/illinois/
*Closest location to South Barrington Residents: Home Depot- Schaumburg, IL
Properly recycling batteries helps prevent environmental damage and reduces fire risks in waste facilities. Thank you for doing your part to recycle responsibly!

Additional information on recycling batteries can be found HERE
As always, I am here to listen to your thoughts and concerns. Feel free to email me at pmccombie@southbarrington.org, or use the anonymous comment boxes located in the lobbies of Village Hall and the Police Department. I review these messages privately and value your input.
Have an enjoyable weekend!
