Dear Residents,
The Plan Commission met this week to discuss several issues including the Area N development.
In light of the church’s recently filed lawsuit and other legal issues and challenges surrounding this project, the Plan Commission has tabled the Area N vote until the January 8th meeting.
The Plan Commission did vote to give preliminary approval to the 22 home Forest View subdivision on the corner of Freeman and Mundhank Road. Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting. We appreciate the community involvement in the Plan Commission work.
Dumpster Fire
Last Friday, there was an unfortunate incident in the Coves Subdivision involving a dumpster that caught fire.
The preliminary investigation suggests that there may have been unlicensed contractors operating without the required permits and inspections.
The building codes we have exist precisely to avoid situations like this. It is important to emphasize the importance of following building codes and regulations in order to ensure the safety of all residents.
We encourage anyone planning construction, remodeling, or improvements to visit the South Barrington website and apply for the required permits. You can find the Permit Guide, which outlines all necessary permits, under the “Apply For A Permit” section. If you are unable to locate the information you need, please feel free to contact the Village of South Barrington Building Department at 847-381-7513. We are more than happy to assist with any questions you may have.
Plastic Bags in Recycling
I want to personally thank everyone for making the effort to recycle.
One important point to remember is to avoid putting plastic bags in recycling containers. We have noticed a number of recycling bins with open covers on garbage day and there are plastic bags in full view.
GROOT has given us this information to share about why plastic bags, including grocery bags, should not be placed in your recycling bins:
- Quality of Recyclables: Mixing plastic bags with other recycling materials can degrade the quality of the entire load in GROOT’s trucks.
- Contamination: Plastic bags can easily become tangled in recycling machinery, causing jams and delays. This can contaminate other recyclable materials.
- Sorting Challenges: They slip through sorting equipment, making it difficult to separate them from other recyclables.
Please do NOT fill your plastic kitchen and other plastic bags with recycling items for the GROOT pick up. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our recycling efforts effective!

Trick or Treat Hours
The countdown is on for the Village’s annual Trick or Treat.
This year, the village-wide Trick or Treat hours will be from 3-7 p.m. on Thursday, October 31. Remember please to TURN ON your porch light if you wish to participate in handing out treats to our local ghouls, ghosts, and goblins.
If you choose not to participate in handing out candy, TURN OFF your porch and driveway lights during these set hours. This will indicate to others that they should not approach the home seeking a treat. And motorists please be mindful of the trick or treaters when driving during these hours. Let’s have a safe and fun Halloween celebration!
As always, I’m here to listen to your thoughts and concerns. Feel free to email me at pmccombie@southbarrington.org, or use the anonymous comment boxes located in the lobbies of Village Hall and the Police Department. I review these messages privately and value your input.
Enjoy the weekend!
