Mayor’s Message for Friday, October 18, 2024

  • Posted by Melissa Moeller
  • On October 18, 2024

Dear Residents,

We are nearing the end of yard waste and brush collection for the year. Please remember that beginning on Oct. 22nd, the last brush pick up for the year will get under way. This is your opportunity to get rid of your brush for the year.

Residential brush and branches must be at the curb by 6:00 am on Tuesday to not miss the collection. Although it may take several days to complete this project, Cuba Township will make only ONE sweep per street through the Village. The collection is free to residents and does not include yard waste such as leaves which can be picked up by Groot. See below for more information.

Area N
The South Barrington Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals met this week to discuss the proposed project at Area N. Since there is still some confusion, I would like to clarify the difference between the South Barrington Park District who owned area N and had an auction on the land they sold to the LLC and the Village of South Barrington who never owned the property. The Village of South Barrington did not have a right to sell Park District owned property and was not involved in the auction that led to area N being sold.

If you look at your real estate tax bill, you will see that even though the South Barrington Park District resides in South Barrington, it is a separate government, has separate elected officials which run their organization and has a separate tax bill line just like Cook County, District 200, Harper College and many other governmental organizations which tax you separately.

I want to thank everyone who showed up at the Plan Commission meeting and who voiced their concerns. We have strived throughout this process to be as open and fair as possible. We have held numerous hearings on the matter and have strived to treat everyone in attendance at these meetings with dignity and respect, while ensuring the voices of our residents are heard. Our goal has always been to follow the law and protect the interests of our community.

However, we found out about legal action the church appears to be taking to disconnect the property from the Village of South Barrington through a newspaper ad, and we did not receive any direct notification prior to the ad running. This is very disappointing, especially since the ad ran the same day as the Plan Commission meeting.

I also want to clarify the zoning process. We are obligated to consider all zoning requests and to treat all requests without prejudice.

The primary functions of the Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals start with a request from a Petitioner and then a referral by the Board of Trustees. Specifically, the Commission is charged with:

  • Comprehensive Planning – developing comprehensive plans for land use, new developments, infrastructure, and growth management
  • Zoning Ordinance Recommendations – making recommendations for any changes to zoning ordinances
  • Subdivision oversight – reviewing subdivision plats to ensure they meet local regulations and promote orderly development.
  • Public Hearings – holding public hearings on matters related to zoning, development, and comprehensive planning
  • Review of Special Use Permits and Variances – providing recommendations to the governing body based on local standards and the comprehensive plan

Our goal has always been to carry out these duties in an honest and transparent manner. We are committed to reaching a resolution to the issues surrounding the Area N property. To that end, we will be having another hearing at 7 pm at Village Hall on Oct. 23rd to continue the discussion on Area N. I invite all concerned residents to attend this important meeting.

Goebbert’s Fall Fest

Goebbert’s Fall Fest is in full swing! From the bakery and wagon rides, to picking out the perfect pumpkin, there is something for everyone at Goebbert’s.

NEW this year is the Beer Barn! Goebbert’s decided to partner with Lucky Monk, another local business, to brew their own beer – Cornfield Gold Lager. If you enjoy quality craft beer, then head out to the Fall Fest and try a pint of the Cornfield Gold Lager!

You can order your tickets online to ensure entrance into the Fest. For information on ALL that Fall Fest has to offer, visit Goebbert’s website.

Yard Waste Collection

As another important reminder, the last day for Groot’s yard waste collection is Monday, November 25.

Stickers are available for purchase at Village Hall and at Jewel locations on 1485 Palatine Road, Hoffman Estates and 150 Main Street, Barrington at a cost of $3.25 each. Come get your stickers before the last pick up of the year on Nov. 25th.

Recycling at the Village

It is inevitable every Holiday season that some of the lights and decorations won’t last the whole season.

This is why I am pleased to announce we are bringing back the Holiday Light Recycling Program.

We are accepting all holiday string lights, in any condition, for recycling through March 3, 2025! A recycling cart marked “RECYCLE HOLIDAY LIGHTS” is located outside the Village Hall entrance for collection. Recycling your old lights allows the reusable parts to be repurposed into new materials and helps to reduce waste.

You can also drop off, inside at the front desk, fluorescent light bulbs/tubes and/or CFL bulbs and CFL 4′ tube lights for recycling.

The Village also continues to offer recycling for real and synthetic cork. Cork may be dropped off in the vestibule of Village Hall, into the “CORK ONLY” bin during regular business hours. Cork items are then recycled into products such as yoga mats, floor coverings, shoe soles, and more. Please encourage your friends and neighbors to keep cork out of the landfills and help contribute to this recycling effort.

Trick or Treat Hours
Kids only have 13 days until Trick or Treating.
The village-wide Trick or Treat hours will be from 3-7 p.m. on Thursday, October 31. Remember please turn on your porch light if you wish to participate in handing out treats to our local ghouls, ghosts, and goblins!
If you choose not to participate in handing out candy, turn off your porch and driveway lights during these set hours. This will indicate to others that they should not approach the home seeking a treat.

As always, I’m here to listen to your thoughts and concerns. Feel free to email me at pmccombie@southbarrington.org, or use the anonymous comment boxes located in the lobbies of Village Hall and the Police Department. I review these messages privately and value your input.

Enjoy the weekend!

Warm regards,

Paula McCombie
Mayor
