We were pleased to welcome representatives from the Cook County Assessor’s Office, Barrington Township Supervisor Robert Alberding, Barrington Township Assessor Mike Gentile and Chief Deputy Assessor Susanne Johnston. Teresa Chandler-community outreach strategist, Jonathan Michie-Manager of Residential Valuations and Guadalupe Marin Director of outreach also assisted in the presentation. Chief of Staff from Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison’s office, Ted Mason, was on hand to answer any questions.
Their presence and expertise helped attendees better understand the property assessment notice process and what it means for local homeowners.
The engagement and thoughtful questions made the event meaningful and informative for all involved. Thank you to everyone who attended!

Stormwater Cost Share Program
Fall is just around the corner which means rain and more rain is on the horizon.
To help residents address drainage issues, the Village established the Stormwater Cost Share program in September of 2023. This is a collaborative public-private partnership to address drainage issues.
It provides a financial contribution to qualifying Village HOA’s to help offset the costs incurred in undertaking construction to better manage storm water management concerns within their subdivisions.
The Stormwater Cost Share Policy clarifies what conditions meet the criteria for the public/private partnership. Please note the cost share fund is designated for infrastructure and not private property initiatives. The Village prepared a drainage report identifying structural defects for each subdivision. This report was given to each HOA and will be used as a priority in reviewing repair requests.
Stormwater applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. To date, for this year, the only Village HOA to have utilized the program is Spring Creek. Interested HOA’s may contact the Village and ask for Administrator Mike Dropka at 847-381-7510, to obtain more information or to fill out an application. The designated Village funds are limited and will not be replenished once depleted.
School Bus Safety
In Illinois, the laws regarding passing a stopped school bus are as follows:
- It is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload students, especially when its stop arm is extended and red lights are flashing.
- Drivers must stop before meeting or overtaking a school bus loading or unloading passengers on a two–lane roadway and remain stopped until the stop signal arm is NO LONGER extended and the flashing lights are turned off.
- The law applies at any location, including highways, private roads and parking lots.
- Penalties for illegally passing a school bus can include fines with a mandatory minimum fine of $300.
To find more detailed information you can refer to the Illinois Vehicle Code, 625 ILCS 5/11-1414.
Arboretum in the news!
The Arboretum made the Daily Herald in story published on July 29th called “A Not So Hidden Suburban Gem!” The word is getting out about this not so hidden gem right here in South Barrington. Check out the article HERE.

And speaking of the Arb, the concert series rolls on with Too Hype Crew on Wednesday, August 13th at 6:30 p.m. Too Hype Crew is a tasteful tribute to the fun hip hop and party anthems of the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s. Featuring all-live (no tracks) instrumentation from a seven-piece band, along with choreographed “Fly Girl” dancers. If you are looking for a blast from the past, then THC is right up your alley.
As always, I am here to listen to your thoughts and concerns. Feel free to email me at pmccombie@southbarrington.org, or use the anonymous comment boxes located in the lobbies of Village Hall and the Police Department. I review these messages privately and value your input.
Have an enjoyable weekend!
Paula McCombie Mayor
