Mayor’s Message for Friday, August 18

Dear Residents,
Information from meeting on Thursday night.
As you may be aware, the Village recently received an application from the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church to amend the existing Planned Unit Development (“P.U.D.”) for a proposed development of a church and school for the Plymouth Brethren to be located on property near 59 & Bartlett Road, known as “Area N” of the P.U.D. The Village’s Plan Commission & Zoning Board of Appeals was ready to engage in a public hearing and recommend that the Village Board approve or deny Plymouth Brethren’s application. Yesterday, prior to the proposed public hearing, the Village received revised plans regarding storm water detention and removing the use of Acadia Drive from the Plymouth Brethren’s overall plan. The change that was addressed is a major change in the uses and/or character of the development. This major change to the development meant that the Village’s Plan Commission & Zoning Board could not vote at the public hearing. As people were planning to come to the Village and speak on this matter, we wanted to give them the ability to do so. So, the Village took the opportunity to hold a public forum on the issue. Plymouth Brethren must reapply with revised plans, and the process must start over. We appreciate the robust debate on this and other issues and will schedule any future hearings at Willow Creek church to more easily accommodate all South Barrington residents on this issue. Please monitor my updates and the Village’s websites for further updates on this matter.
It is important to remember that the Village of South Barrington and the South Barrington Park District are two wholly separate governmental agencies. The Village of South Barrington operates under the Illinois Municipal Code. It is governed by a Village President (or Mayor) and the Village Board of Trustees. Villages possess vast powers such as being able to take steps to for example, prevent vagrancy, regulate the construction, repair, and use of sewers, and regulate certain enumerated businesses. The South Barrington Park District is a separate and distinct governmental agency from the Village of South Barrington. The South Barrington Park District is governed by its own elected board of commissioners. It is governed by the Park District Code. The South Barrington Park District is established to provide opportunities for the public to participate in recreation programs and sports activities. Although the Village of South Barrington and the South Barrington Park District share some similar boundaries, the Village of South Barrington and the South Barrington Park District are separate taxing districts, with separate logos, and separate functions.
Local Cub Scout Pack 287 will be using the southern end of the Park District property South of Bridges Drive to launch rockets. Weather permitting, they will be out there Thursday, August 24 from 5:30-7:45 p.m. with a rain date of Friday, August 25. Click here to see the designated area for launch.
If you are planning to use the Village owned Conservancy, please make note that the Park District will be hosting their annual BASA soccer tournament the weekend of August 26-27. The attendees will be parking in the Conservancy lot, but some parking spaces will be reserved for residents. To help alleviate traffic congestion, fewer games have been scheduled at one time.
One more week until Commissioner Kevin Morrison’s Environmental Resource Fair on Saturday, August 26! This free event is being held at Rahlf’s Woods, in Streamwood. Please save-the-date and register here. Bring the family for some fun and to learn how to protect the environment.
The application window has been extended for the 2023 Source Grant. Small businesses may benefit from the $40 million in grants available. Applications are being accepted through next Friday, August 25. Visit cookcountysmallbiz.org/sourcegrant for more information.
Sunday’s Music in the Plaza features Fast Times Chicago. Fast Times is a high energy 80’s band that will be performing Sunday, August 20, from 1- 4 p.m in the Arboretum.
There are only a few weeks left to enjoy the Arboretum Summer Concert Series. This Wednesday, August 23, the fun continues with the band LP Vinyl. LP Vinyl brings an exciting, high energy tribute to the rock music of the 70’s and 80’s. Come down to the show at the Arboretum from 6:30 to 9 p.m. For more information about this event and other upcoming concerts click here.
For many South Barrington students, next week is their first day back at school. I want to wish all the South Barrington students a big WELCOME BACK. The Village Board and staff hope you have a great year!
