Dear Residents,
It’s that time of year when we all get an extra hour of sleep.
Don’t forget to “fall back” on Sunday, November 3 at 2:00 am. Some clocks will manually need to be set back by 1-hour. Cell phones and other smart devices normally update automatically.
As another reminder, this would be a good time to test and replace your batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Happy Diwali
Happy Diwali to all those who celebrate!
The 5-day festival Diwali (Deepawali, Deepavali) began on October 31. It is the biggest and the brightest of all Hindu festivals. It is the festival of lights. Deep means “light” and avali means “a row,” which when put together with deep means to become “a row of lights.”
Property Tax Assessment a success
I want to personally thank everyone who attended the “How to Appeal Your Property Tax Assessment,” seminar held this past week. At the seminar, residents received an overview on how to file an appeal and one-on-one assistance. Schaumburg Township homeowners can appeal their Cook County property taxes through November 5, 2024. Anyone with questions regarding their property taxes can visit the Cook County Assessors website here.
Pictured below are residents that attended the Tax Appeal presentation.
Police Chief awards two officers with Excellent Police Duty Awards
Police Chief Garrison recently presented two local officers with Excellent Police Duty Awards based on their heroism and exemplary service to the community.
Police Officer Palacios award is based on his selfless response to an incident involving one subject in two home invasions during the early morning hours of September 9, that resulted in the suspect being apprehended.
Detective Ornelas is being awarded for his response in the apprehension of subjects that were connected to a recent homicide in Chicago. The suspects had fled to the suburbs.
Chief Garrison said the awards were given because the officers exemplified the highest values of honor, integrity, and respect. Their decisive actions undoubtedly made a difference in a critical moment, demonstrating an extraordinary level of character. The courage and leadership in a stressful situation not only helped apprehend a dangerous individual, but also serves as a reminder of the impact one police officer can have on the community they serve. Thank you, Police Officer Palacios, and Detective Ornelas, for your service to our community!

Say ‘NO’ to Distracted Driving
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced his office is spearheading a multi-faceted campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving, I wanted to share some of the information we received from his office. This information is good for everyone, but it is especially important for the younger drivers in your household.
The office’s “One Road. One Focus” campaign — specifically geared toward educating teen drivers about the consequences of distracted driving — includes a new requirement for teens to watch a video that details the consequences of dangerous driving behaviors during their learner’s permit phase before they receive their driver’s license.
The Secretary of State’s office announced other new programs and opportunities for Illinois residents including the rollout of “Fast-Lane” DMV kiosks as part of a pilot program this fall. The rollout involves deploying 15 kiosks located in Chicago, the suburbs and downstate in Mariano’s, Jewel-Osco, Kroger, and Meijer grocery stores. With an average transaction time of about two minutes, Illinoisans can renew their driver’s licenses, state IDs and purchase vehicle stickers using the kiosks.
Finally, the Secretary of State’s office is now accepting applications for the 2024 John Lewis Youth Leadership Award (JLYLA)! The award honors the impact of the extraordinary accomplishments of Congressman John Lewis. The Illinois Secretary of State and NASS are seeking young Illinoisans ages 18-25 who have demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and a strong commitment to civic engagement. For more information about these programs and other opportunities see my message below or visit https://www.ilsos.gov/.
As always, I’m here to listen to your thoughts and concerns. Feel free to email me at pmccombie@southbarrington.org, or use the anonymous comment boxes located in the lobbies of Village Hall and the Police Department. I review these messages privately and value your input.
Enjoy the weekend!
Warm regards,
Paula McCombie
