Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that up to 80 percent of crashes are caused by driver inattention/distracted driving. Dialing on a cellular telephone can increase the chance of crashing by 1.3 times. As many as 10 percent of Illinois drivers are estimated to be using their mobile phones at any given moment in time.
The new law, House Bill 72, passed by the Illinois General Assembly in 2009 that took effect on January 1, 2010, bans the use of cellular telephones by drivers while traveling on a roadway through a marked highway construction zone or school zone.
South Barrington Police will be issuing tickets for violations of this law. The penalty associated for the violations of this law is $120.00 for each offense.
