A letter of explanation and a set of forms were mailed to every facility in the Village with a grease trap. The forms are to the right and must be returned to Village Engineer Natalie Karney no later than January 15, 2016 with the drawing and photographs as described in the letter below.
When fats, oils and greases are released into the sewer system, they cling to the sides of the pipes and cause blockage in the sewer. This blockage can restrict the flow in the sewer causing back up into buildings and raw sewage to overflow onto the ground surface. Blockage can lead to costly operation and maintenance activities to clean and repair damaged sewer pipes. The repairs may include use of high pressure cleaning devices or sewer pipe replacement.Repair costs increase user fees, and an individual user may additionally spend thousands of dollars in cleanup after a sewer backs up into their facility. We can all agree that prevention is more beneficial.
The Village is conducting a survey to determine current grease trap use and maintenance procedures in place by food establishments in the Village. This information is critical to revising Title 4, Chapter 8A of the Municipal Code to provide more adequate protection for the Village sewer.
Enclosed are the Grease Trap Maintenance Survey, the “Best Management Practices” (BMP) Survey and a sample sketch for making a drawing of each grease trap location in your facility. You can also complete and download the survey forms on-line at www.southbarrington.org, under Forms and Documents. The items listed below can be emailed to me at email@example.com or sent by regular mail to the Village Hall.Of course, if you want to bring them in person, I would be happy to meet with you. There is also a drop box by the front door.
